Independence Day ranks up there as one of my favorite holidays. I mean BBQ’s, freedom, colorful explosions in the night sky; what’s not to love?

The 4th is also the day of the Nathan’s Company hot dog eating contest, and some how this event has classified itself as either entertainment or a sport because they show it on Espn every year. I’ve become completely fascinated with it over the past 5 years and plan on watching it again this year. For those of you who don’t know, this is a contest to determine who can eat the most hot dogs with buns in a ten minute period. The current record is 68, and is held by America’s own Joey Chestnut. Up until Chestnut’s recent dominance Japan had won 9 out of 10 contests. Now it is America eating at a record setting pace as it should be.

I grew up and still live in the great state of Oklahoma where it is perfectly acceptable for little kids to play with tiny explosives. I loved/love fireworks and can “oooo and aaaaaah” the best of them. Growing up, we would always go to my grandparents house and spend the majority of the day setting off “black cats” and snakes and all the other day time fun as we were counting down the hours until the big show at dusk. Our parents made sure we knew to respect what we were doing and not try to light and throw anything. That didn’t stop us from seeing who could come up with the most awesome explosion. I still have a scar on my stomach where my sister tied two “black cats” together; one went off before the other which shot it up into the air where it hit me just as it went off. Every time I see that scar, I can’t wait for the 4th.

Freedom is an amazing thing; and if I can Jesus juke you for just a moment, I’d like to share one of my favorite verses with you.

For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Galatians 5:13)

As you celebrate your freedom with family, food, fireworks, and lakes, remember to treat those around you with love and consider their needs above your own. Freedom is awesome when paired with love for one another. Have a safe and blessed holiday!

And remember if Joe Dirt ever comes to your fireworks stand, you better be prepared for this.

You’re saying you have no black cats, Roman candles or screaming meemies? Come on. You don’t got no ladyfingers, buzz bottles, snicker bombs… church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippedy-doodas, crap flappers? You’re gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don’t have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

What are your favorite things about the 4th? How many hot dogs can you eat in 10 minutes?

Thanks for the chuckle and the reminder of what true freedom is… it comes from He that dwells within us.

It’s crazy to me how much I’ve been getting into it the last several years. Good to find a fellow fan. 🙂
