Not Always as Confident as I appear

“Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers – can you see how incredible this is going to be? – hang gliding, come on!”

That’s a line taken from one of my favorite movies of all time, “Bottle Rocket.” To understand the line and the character that said it, you must have a little bit of a background of the film. The movie centers around three friends plotting their lives as criminal masterminds. The line above was spoken by the leader of the gang of misfits named Dignan. Dignan’s schemes are always elaborate and over the top; and despite the lack of experience that the gang possesses, he has no lack of confidence in what he has planned out for them.

Despite all of this, he lets his guard down after having himself and the way he is dressed berated by another character. He utters the following line,

” I don’t know, sometimes…. I mean I’m not always as confident as I look.”

I’m a lot like Dignan in that way. I don’t have the over the top schemes and ideas, but I do tend to oversell myself and my confidence level on occasion. I’ll admit that I’m not always as confident as I appear to be. The good news is, that despite my moments of insecurities and lack of confidence, I still have something to be supremely confident in. I still can find encouragement. I have grace guiding me daily. I don’t have to focus on the lack or the falling down.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

Charles H Spurgeon  said the following in a sermon that he delivered on the “Throne of Grace:”

It is…set up on purpose for the dispensation of grace; a throne from which every utterance is an utterance of grace; the scepter that is stretched out from it is the scepter of grace; the decrees proclaimed from it are purposes of grace; the gifts that are scattered down its golden steps are gifts of grace; and he that sits upon the throne is grace itself.

He is grace and we can approach that grace confidently. I have gifts and abilities that I have been granted. They are there even when I focus incorrectly and lack self confidence. I’m blown away and humbled by the fact that grace always prevails in my life and I can always be confident in it.

So there you have it; it might be a funny thing to learn a lesson from an over the top movie and character; but I’m thankful that He can use those things to speak to us and remind us of His goodness.

  1. Confidence can be found in Him no matter what the situation or what we face. You simply have to come. Good stuff, Philip. Thanks.

Yeah – what *He* said. Good stuff, Philip – thanks!

We’re all like that Dignan guy – we all oversell ourselves in the hope someone will like us long enough to get past the facade and then still like us.
